Matti, what do we see in the picture?
When I’m not on assignment or at a meeting I work from my home office. I have a nice 10 meter commute to ”the closet” next to the garage. It´s really small and this was a fun opportunity to try shooting something in it. Of course I had to recruit the kids as my assistants but they were just in the middle of some intriguing game outside in the yard and weren’t that collaborative…
Lots of light, complex structure: What is your main working focus?
When working I make rather than take photographs. It’s a great priviledge to be able to do this kind of work where I can fulfill my escapist needs. I love to shoot just about anything from portraits and lifestyle to cars and architecture but the thing that excites me is telling stories with powerful emotion to them. This corona selfie might seem stuffed at first but actually the colored lights and the visible extra gear help to draw attention to the essential – my face – and thus making less out of more. And that is usually the case on assignment: everything’s so chaotic and the first thing you need to do is calm things down. Simple is always better.
If we did not have a crisis, what would you be working on right now?
On the photography side I had some nice portraits planned and two lifestyle shoots for clients designing their brand renewal. I shoot a lot of video as well and there was discussion about an aviation related shoot but now everything’s on hold.
What are you working on instead?
The recent years me and my team have developed awesome ways of working with video and gathered a network of top professionals for high-end film production. So now I’m contributing to my personal projects that are mainly on the motion side of photography. This is a great opportunity to research and write stuff.
What is your impression: How is the crisis affecting the Finnish photography industry as a whole?
Everyone’s affected by this and it’s going to be hard for us all. The ones who have the least investments and expenses should be ok. But if it´s still like this after the summer… I’m afraid to even think about it. On the other hand there might be new kind of opportunities when things start rolling again.
What is your photographic wish for the time after the crisis?
I wish we humans would be smarter and more united after this. I wish the Trumps of the world would lose their power over us. Regarding work I wish more long term thinking in brand building because that is directly reflected to the stories we get to tell.
